Carroll College is a hidden (well, maybe not so hidden!) gem at the Collegeology office. A fellow counselor has described it as a Colleges That Change Lives college that’s not in the book. The small Catholic college in Helena, Montana boasts an environment that is collaborative and nurturing yet still challenging. The close relationships student forge with their professors makes the college experience rich and more personal.
Carroll is known for its pre-med advising, which is totally understandable when you realize that advising starts the first week of freshman year. When Carroll students apply for medical school, letters of recommendation are written by committee and informed by, not one, but FOUR faculty members the applicant identifies as references. Carroll professors speak to both the student’s academic abilities and their character.
In addition to the fantastic sciences Carroll offers, it also offers the unique major, anthrozoology. What is that? Well, available only at Carroll, it’s the examination of the human-animal relationship and learning how this relationship can help people live better lives. Students can work with horses and dogs, learning how to train and work with both in safe and humane ways.
The merit aid available from Carroll can be very generous and not just in the amount a student might receive. When a student is awarded a Carroll scholarship, they keep that scholarship based on their “good standing” in the college, not a hard and fast GPA. Carroll understands that sometimes life happens; a bad case of the flu or an emergency dental procedure – and perhaps a subsequent dip in a student’s grades – shouldn’t prevent them from retaining their scholarship. Sounds practical, right? Check out their merit scholarship calculator to see what you or your kiddo might be eligible for.
Annie’s local food rec: If you ever find yourself visiting Carroll College in Helena, make sure you swing by The Big Dipper ice cream shop. The cardamom and Mexican chocolate were my two favorites J!
