The Collegeology Advising Package (Begins JUNIOR year)
Like any effective plan for maximizing student potential, the Collegeology approach is developmental, starting with where the student is now and ending where the student needs to be to feel successful and to meet their personal goals.
Because each student’s path on this journey is measured in different steps, some might benefit from fewer, longer planning times and others from shorter, more frequent meetings. In general, however, the package consists of three to five meetings with students and parents or students alone. The Collegeology College Search Form needs to be completed prior to the student’s first meeting. Following is the sequence of steps.
Meeting 1: Interview and review of college application process. Following this meeting, student will be sent a list of possible colleges based on all intake information.
Meeting 2: Discussion of student’s findings after researching list of possible colleges
Meeting 3: Establishing a timeline for the student that includes college visits, writing college essays, and completing the application process
Meeting 4: Discussion of college visits. Narrowing down list of colleges.
Meeting 5: Making final choices.
Each student receives a College Application Packet (”the binder”) to use at home. This includes information about applying to colleges, making college visits, preparing for interviews, attending college fairs, taking college entrance exams, financial aid and other helpful materials. Students can also take advantage of the Do What You Are online assessment tool.
In addition, students may use email or a personal meeting for assistance with:
• Essay and resume review, including initial brainstorming and assistance with revisions
• Application organization and review
• Interview preparation
• Reviewing standardized test scores and other reports as they apply to college plans
• Individualized concerns about learning disability support; athletic interviews and tryouts; review of drama, dance or fine art portfolios; or deferring college admission to participate in travel or other enrichment programs.
As part of the Collegeology Advising Program, each student has the option of participating in a Summer Workshop prior to senior year. Over the 4 days, students get a head start on the application process in which most will complete the following:
• Finalize the list of schools
• Common Application (not including supplements)
• One personal statement
• Additional writing samples possibly usable for supplemental short answer questions
• Final resume
• Mock interview
• Information necessary to request teacher recommendations (not including school-specific requests)
• Plan for the fall
